Brannten Schnüre clots together their own intergenerational, pan-continental DIY underground via their own Quirlschlängle outpost.
The Leipzig-based Volksmusik duo are known to operate within a murky European underground that often seems impenetrable. Nebengleis, loosely translating to ‘side tracks’, coagulates this nebulous sub-sub-scene into a tangible whole that reveals its roots and offers a glimpse into the future. Dowsing their roots back, veteran ethno-industrialists Vox Populi! open up with a glistening poem sung in Farsi, whilst peripheral kraut/improv legend Limpe Fuchs and HNAS founder Christoph Heemann contribute pieces of their own, the former a jaunty piano / voice piece and the later a brooding, mysterious string-drone compilation that swells and pulls us further into the orbit. Expanding out of the Europe finds California’s NAVE and HTRK’s Jonnine whose galvanising seance ‘And Now I’m Lifted’ recalls the similar detuned mystique of Jandek. All this provides a source of context, inspiration and admiration for their own music, which features twice, one as a duo with ‘Weckerlied’ where Katie Rich’s unmistakable half sung/spoken vocal delivery feels as alive as ever, and as a musky Sebaldian sound-collage from Christian’s solo Läuten der Seele project. Given the title of the collection, there is little other that threads this music together other than the loose interconnectedness of the personnel involved. But as a flag in the sand and a means of understanding what Brannten Schnüre is, are, and might become, we couldn’t really ask for more. (Mint / New – limited 1 per person pls!)
